Lies We Tell Women That Hold Them Back From Success

Growing up, young girls are taught to be quiet, polite and sweet.

But those qualities don’t often translate into later business success.

It’s no wonder women are falling behind—we’ve been hearing lies our entire lives!

I went from being a shy, proper young lady to a seven-figure entrepreneur when I realized the lies I was being told. I reversed those lies to find the truth and write a new story— one where I can be a successful entrepreneur because of my gender, not despite of it.

If we want more women to succeed, we’ve got to stop lying to them.

Here are five lies we tell women and the truth behind them:

1 . You have to weigh a certain amount before you can achieve greatness.

Women are told that our bodies have to look a certain way or be a certain size if we want to be successful. The truth is that no one cares about your weight. True beauty comes from the glow of confidence. Our bodies are strong and able, and our worth isn’t determined by our dress size. Don’t wait until you hit a certain weight to show up—be energetic and find success now.

2 . Don’t take up space.

Young girls are often taught to be quiet and shrink themselves physically and mentally. That translates into women who are afraid to speak up and advocate for themselves. Don’t be afraid to take up space! You can't be a leader without having a voice. Step into your power and make sure you have a strong platform to stand on. Speak up and don’t apologize for being there taking up space.

3 . Ambition is bad.

Many women are considered overambitious and degraded for wanting to succeed, while those same characteristics are celebrated in men. The truth is that ambition is beautiful. It’s ok to want to make money and be successful. When a woman succeeds, everyone around her benefits.

4 . Women should give, give, give.

Girls are taught to be nice and give to others. But when you spend your entire life giving to other people, you don’t have any energy left to take care of yourself. Stop giving so much to everyone else and focus on yourself. Don’t worry about always being polite and taking care of others. When women take care of themselves, they have more energy to benefit others and bring good into the world. It’s the same as flying on an airplane—you have to put your own oxygen mask on before you can help others.
