UN urges Singapore to avoid death




A Singapore court has suspended theSLOTXOexecution of a Malaysian man accused of drug smuggling. after complaints from human rights activists that he had a learning disability

Nagenthran Dhamlingam, 33, was scheduled to be executed by hanging on Wednesday, Nov. 10, but the court suspended the sentence on Monday (Nov 8) and would. Conducted an additional inquiry today (9).

Singapore has one of the most severe anti-drug laws in the world and a court has previously rejected claims that hanging an intellectually handicapped person, Nagenthran, would be unconstitutional.

A United Nations (UN) panel of human rights experts has appealed to a Singapore court to delay the execution. and abstaining from the death penalty for Nagenthran in accordance with international human rights law

“We are deeply concerned that If this appeal is dropped He could be executed as scheduled,” UN experts said.

Nagenthran was arrested in April 2009 after smuggling 42.72 grams of heroine into Singapore. by hiding it in the thigh and was sentenced to death by a Singapore court in November 2010.

Attempts to ask the court to reduce the sentence to life imprisonment were unsuccessful. Last year's request for pardon was also rejected.
