Miami Heat Trade Meyers Leonard To Oklahoma City Thunder For Trevor Ariza Week After Using Anti-Semitic Comment

Just over a week after using an anti-Semitic comment during a live video game stream on Twitch, the Miami Heat traded center Meyers Leonard to the Oklahoma City Thunder along with a 2027 second-round pick for veteran wing Trevor Ariza, according to multiple reports.

The 29-year-old Leonard is expected to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a deal, according to ESPN. He last played on Jan. 9 before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. The Illinois product has a $10.15 million team option on his contract for next season, but there’s no expectation that he will play for Oklahoma City going forward. The Thunder will likely try and move his contract before the March 25 trade deadline and release him if a trade can’t be made.

After the Twitch video of Leonard making the remark surfaced and circulated on March 9, he was fined $50,000 and was suspended from all team activities and the facility for a week. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called the slur “inexcusable and hurtful,” while the Anti-Defamation League accepted that Leonard was “genuinely remorseful.”

Leonard released an apology last week on Instagram, while a Heat statement “vehemently condemns the use of any form of hate speech.” Leonard, an avid gamer, had business partnerships with Astro Gaming, Origin PC and Scuf Gaming end because of the incident.
